During class today Mrs. Wood had a small overall survey of her class, and it made me stop to think all the benefits I recieved from this class.  I really enjoyed this class. I learned many new and interesting things.I loved all of the class discussion, the assignments and the schedule. If I could I would take it again.

Research Paper

Right now I feel worried and scared that I might not be able to finish my research paper. I am now working on two of them one for this class and another one for my ENGL 2341 class. I know my subject and what I am going to be writing about in both of them, but I’m struggling in finding time to sit down to work on them. I hope everything turns out fine. School is almost over so that is a huge motivation to work hard on these last two projects.

Understanding the plays

Reading and analyzing Othello, A Doll’s House, and The Glass Menagerie has been a new experience for me. At first, I did not understand very much of it but with the group activities in class and my notes I got to understand each of them much better. I hope that writing my essay will be the same or a bit less difficult than my poetry essay. Each of the plays contain strong lessons that we can apply to our own personal lives.

Challenge and Achievement

While writing my poetry essay my greatest achievement was to actually read, analyze, and understand a poem. Poetry would not usually interest me in any way. I always thought poetry was only for people who liked to read and had a large vocabulary. In Ms. Wood’s class I learned how amazing poems are. How powerful their meaning is. I never saw myself writing a paper about poetry but since I understood and enjoyed it so much, writing about it wasn’t so hard.

Lady Lazarus

1. The symbols of Lady Lazarus and a cat with nine lives represent death and resurrection. The different dilemmas and sufferings that she is living cause her to die for a certain period of time. But then she comes to life again just like she was before.

2. Stevenson’s opinion about Plath’s poem means that Plath’s feelings and emotions about herself and her surrounding has gone way beyond normal. One can normally feel disappointment and hatred about the struggles and  complications that come to our lives, but not to the extreme that Plath reaches. Her disapproval and fury have come to the limit  therefore, these feelings aren’t what a normal person would feel. Which leads her to attempting suicide.

3. The metaphor “dying is an art” signifies that death also has a more than ordinary significance. This metaphor puts death as amusing and Plath feels that she has the skill to hold attention with her death.

4.The ending of the “Lady Lazarus” does imply that Plath will outlive her suicide attempts. Even though she blames her surroundings for her passing death “out of the ash” she will rise again; she will resucitate.

English Con Salsa

The poem “English con Salsa” is the one I chose for my poetry essay.  English is my second language and just by looking at the title I knew I could understand it and relate to it. One way, I believe, you can call the mixing of spanish and english language is Spanglish. Like me, a lot of hispanic children and teenagers speak English at work and school and they speak spanish at home. Therefore, the way we speak is almost like the way Gina Valdes wrote this poem. This poem is also a reality in the lives of  those who migrate to the U.S; everything is different and new. But Through Gina’s choice of words and imagery, she makes her students feel more comfortable with the American culture and language.

At Last We Killed The Roaches

Lucille Clifton (b.1936)

at last we killed the roaches.
mama and me. she sprayed,
i swept the ceiling and they fell
dying onto our shoulders, in our hair
covering us with red. the tribe was broken,
the cooking pots were ours again
and we were glad, such cleanliness was grace
when i was twelve. only for a few nights,
and then not much, my dreams were blood
my hands were blades and it was murder murder
all over the place.

This poem startled me because last week I had the same experience with my father. My house was invaded with roaches making all the family and visitors very uncomfortable. Just like Lucille Clifton  describes it in this poem we all felt like our pots,  plates, refrigerator, and bathrooms all belonged to the cockroaches.  Therefore, my father and I decided to exterminate all the roaches that had overspread our entire house. I can connect with her imagery of her experience killing cockroaches. Although it may seem funny, the things you do during the day stay in your head  and you can dream about all of them that night when you go to bed.  That same night, after killing the cockroaches I dreamt that enormous cockroaches were coming after me trying to eat me. When I woke up I laughed at my dream and felt a big relief knowing my house was immaculate. Despite the fact that roaches are unpleasent insects,  Lucille and I had a small feeling of guilt becauses they are creatures that also fight to stay alive.

About Me

Ever since I was a little girl I have been taught to love God with all my heart, and to serve Him. My church, Soldiers of the Cross, is my life. I have been raised in the teachings of Christianity and have consecrated my life to God. My two older brothers and I are members of a trio called JaRiBe. Robert, Armando, and I have performed in different churches throughout the U.S and various other countries. The wonderful experience of being sent out on a mission to preach the gospel is difficult to describe in words. I believe it is a privilege to know God and to be a Christian. My goal here at San Jacinto College is to finish my Associates Degree in Business to then transfer to the University of Houston to study for two more years.
